As a designer, I love this time of year when major paint companies introduce their Colors of the Year. It adds a little bit of extra joy sprinkled in with the holidays. And it’s exciting because we get to see how these colors will influence interiors over the next few years.

These hand-picked paints come from color experts in the field. More often than not, they influence kitchen and bath trends. Designers love when homeowners gravitate towards new colors for a fresh perspective on their space.

To make it easy, we’ve compiled a list of the top forecasted colors for 2022 to help inspire your home interior journey!

The top forecasted colors for 2022 include, from left to right, Behr - Breezeway, Benjamin Moore - October Mist, Pittsburgh Paints - Olive Sprig, Valspar - Blanched Thyme, Glidden - Guacamole, Farrow & Ball - Breakfast Room Green, Sherwin Williams - Evergreen Fog, Akzo Nobel - Bright Skies, Farrow & Ball - Stone Blue, Valspar - Mountain River, and Valspar - Orchid Ash.

Under the MasterBrand portfolio, we offer a variety of these on-trend shades that can be utilized in any area of the home. If your heart is set on one of these paints, we proudly offer custom color capabilities in our MidContinent, Urban Effects, UltraCraft, Decora, KitchenCraft, Omega, StarMark, and Fieldstone cabinetry lines.

Colors of the Year

In recent years, Colors of the Year have been heavily influenced by blue-grays. Considering recent color trends in cabinets, we’re not surprised to see that greens are now making a big splash. By grouping these colors into categories, we can more easily talk about them in-depth.

Fresh Shades of Green

The strong influence of greens – like Breezeway, October Mist, Olive Sprig, and Evergreen Fog – are cool and fresh. These greens are usable as long-term, neutral colors anywhere in the home. They are also stunning choices for cabinetry. If shades of white or cream are in your home’s overall color palette, these greens will work great to add a pop of color.

When choosing to add color to your cabinetry, look for colors that have a bit of complexity in their undertones. These colors tend to blend well with others and this means your color choice will essentially have a longer life cycle.

Colors of the Year: Breezeway, October Mist, Olive Sprig and Evergreen Fog

Bold Shades of Green

Blanched Thyme, Guacamole, and Breakfast Room Green are more energetic, bold, vibrant, and warmer colors with yellowish undertones. These are wonderful colors to bring nature into the home. They’re not quite as neutral and they will definitely make a statement, so we recommend using these in a room you want to add energy and warmth.

Colors of the Year: Blanched Thyme, Guacamole, and Breakfast Room Green

Spectrum of Blues

Some of the colors of the year still do fall into the blue family, which we know has been very popular in cabinetry for the last five years. Orchid Ash, Bright Skies, Stone Blue and, Mountain River show how the blue tones are evolving into 2022. This broader spectrum of blues is very useable and showcases why blue has become a mainstream staple in the home.

MasterBrand Introduces Finish of the Year

For the second consecutive year, MasterBrand proudly introduces our very own Finish of the Year!

This neutral paint is a pale, off-white color that makes an excellent foundation for most palettes. It’s not too white and not too gray. This finish has the ability to make a statement on its own or be paired with other accents. It purposely blends with any stain, dark to light, as well as most opaques because of its light gray undertones. Start using shades of this trendy off-white color today, which goes by the name Crushed Ice with our Decora cabinets, Nordic with our KitchenCraft cabinets and Icy Avalanche with our Diamond cabinets.

MasterBrand's Finish of the Year for 2022 is a pale, off-white color that makes an excellent foundation for most palettes.

MasterBrand Cabinets partnered with designer Cassandra LaVelle to breathe new life into her basement kitchen remodel.

Featuring a wide variety of styles, Diamond Cabinets are featured throughout many incredible home projects. A recent collaboration with Coco Kelley resulted in the transformation of Cassandra LaVelle’s cellar kitchen into a beautiful, inviting new space.

When revealing the project, Cassandra said, “It goes without saying that cabinets are the foundation of any kitchen remodel. They are the item you are most likely to spend your time agonizing over and definitely the place where diving into the details really matters.”

Cassandra has formed an ongoing partnership with MasterBrand Cabinets, beginning with a main floor kitchen remodel which featured Omega Cabinets. In her current space, Cassandra selected Diamond Cabinets in Limestone, a gray hue, that brought just the right balance of color and neutrality when paired with her warm-toned floors. The beadboard Liberty door style also perfectly accented the 1920’s craftsman farmhouse look of the home.

The MasterBrand design team worked with Cassandra to maximize storage in the space, including a corner unit with pull out, layered storage, a combination garbage/recycle pull out and pull out drawer storage for pots and pans. For the perfect finishing touch, Cassandra interspersed floating shelves within her upper cabinetry to infuse an open and airy feel. This combination enhanced the functionality of her room and created an easy and accessible space to place and display her go-to items.

Stainless Steel Floating Shelves

The popularity of floating shelves among homeowners, particularly within kitchens, is on the rise and it is easy to see why. A simple but impactful way to introduce an accent color, new texture or material within a space, floating shelves can create focal areas within the overall cabinet layout while creating a modern, clean aesthetic to display treasured items.

“Homeowners often use open or floating shelving for decorative purposes, but they also offer a great solution for organizing items in highly functional ways,” says Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends at MasterBrand Cabinets. “Floating Shelves are a great complement for high-use items like spices, oils or even glassware and plates. If you have regular-use items, open shelving can be very convenient – especially when used in tandem with cabinets.”

Homeowners are forgoing the formal dining room and using their islands not only for cooking but dining as well. A smart and beautiful kitchen island can serve all your kitchen and dining needs, helping you get the best of both worlds.  In our recent designer survey, we found that 52% of kitchen updates include eat-in spaces for dining or seating. Let’s look at some ways you can incorporate eat-in spaces into your kitchen.

Combine your table with your island to extend seating while saving some space.

Functional Kitchen Island for Dining

A kitchen island can really ground the space and enhance the dining experience. By simply adding a space for chairs, this is a wonderful idea for a family kitchen or for people who enjoy cooking for guests. Combining a table with an island is a great space saver, and an extendable table can seat a crowd without taking up too much space and providing increased functionality of your overall floorplan.

There are some kitchen island shapes that would be better suited for dining. The L shaped island would lend itself well to be a dining kitchen island. Giving the cook space for food preparation while also allowing guests to converse at the table. The T shaped island which essentially bumps a table up against the island, provides plenty of seating for six or even more.  This shape gives guests the ability to face each other while dining.  Dining kitchen islands are a great option when you may have a tight space but love entertaining.

Another way to include an eat-in space is to add banquette seating to your island.  This can create a warm and cozy spot for the entire family to gather for daily meals. Guests can still sit and comfortably chat with the chef while they finish cooking or the whole group can relax back and enjoy a leisurely dining experience. The bench seating can provide a benefit that is often overlooked, extra storage that is hidden from sight and increased comfort in the hub of the home.

Since the kitchen island serves so many purposes, this design choice should not be made lightly. During your next kitchen island design keep in mind the idea of adding a dining space to your wish list along with functional storage.

If you are looking to add some special details to your kitchen, try some of these modified cabinet end panel designs to elevate your space.

Open Shelf Cabinets

A great way to showcase items in your kitchen is open shelving, or even more common, is open cabinets or glass cabinets. These look great by themselves, but the design can certainly be enhanced by grounding the cabinet to the countertop through a modification of the cabinet end panels’ construction to create a hutch-like appearance. In the example shown below, the designer even accentuated the lower cabinet back with a contrasting material and embellished with additional shelves and brackets. This solution provides enough flexibility to customize however you may want.

Kitchen Island End Panels

Islands are extremely functional, but they also serve a decorative purpose particularly when they are such a large feature within the space. Using the depth of the side of the islands as an opportunity to bring a style element into the design is a common practice. In the next inspiration, you can see the shiplap feature with a decorative leg support really transforms the farmhouse style into a statement piece. This example can be achieved in multiple ways depending on the cabinet brand you are working with. Additionally, the X-end motif cabinet end panels can also be achieved in a number of different ways to create a rustic or farmhouse aesthetic or even an industrial feel. These types of finishing details can be easily overlooked but can certainly take your design up a notch when used.
