Choosing the perfect finish combination for your new kitchen is an exciting step in the design process. There are so many options to choose from that it might be hard to keep up with the newest “it” colors and stains. This is where we can help!

In recent years, paints have pushed aside wood stains, shining through with colors like whites, blues, greens, and grays. While these color tones have shifted over the past five to seven years, we are now seeing wood-stained cabinetry make its official comeback! In fact, in a recent designer survey conducted by MasterBrand, light stains have made their way into the top three trending finishes!

Understanding that yellow, orange, and red stains have made their exit is important. The newest stains to consider using in your next project have gray, brown, and blonde undertones, making them suitable for blending with modern finishes. These new stains can take on a traditional role, but pairing them with painted cabinetry is now a more modern approach with traditional elements.

Now, let that wood grain shine through and dive into what’s trending!

Trending Wood-Stained Kitchen Cabinetry

The trending stains that are making their way back into the kitchen are natural, white oak and light to medium tones. We’ve removed the yellow, orange, and red hues from the undertones to bring wood-stained cabinetry into the 21st century!

Cabinet doors and kitchen cabinets displaying new stain colors with gray, brown, and blonde undertones.
On-trend wood stains contain gray, brown, and blonde undertones.

Natural wood-stained cabinets have the potential to turn your space into a new-age rustic retreat. Mid-tone stains with browns or grays give a soft, modern feel. If an all-wood look is something you crave, try using a mid-tone stain with a blonde undertone. It provides dimension and richness, but be sure that the space has plenty of natural light. You want the space to be warm and inviting, not dark and dull. Make use of natural materials and finishes to complete the space and bring it to the trendy world of modern elegance!

Mixing Finishes in the Kitchen

A trend that is here to stay is mixing finishes in the kitchen! Why settle for one finish when you can have two or maybe three? If you’re really feeling confident in your style, there are many different ways you can mix color or even other stains with your stained cabinetry.

An option that is always safe is to add a finish to your island that contrasts with the perimeter cabinets. The island is a great area to pop color, texture, or a subtle finish to add personality to the space.

If you’re feeling confident, other areas to play around with contrasting finishes include a stand-alone wood hood/island combination, shelving, base cabinets, a separate hutch, or cabinets that vary in depth.

When choosing a complementary finish, be mindful of the undertones that your stain is showing off. Most of the trendy stains now have gray undertones. You want to choose something with the same undertones otherwise you risk a clash of finishes.

Under the Masterbrand portfolio, there is an abundance of stains to accomplish any style trend. As a designer, I love this time of year when major paint companies introduce their Colors of the Year. It adds a little bit of extra joy sprinkled in with the holidays. And it’s exciting because we get to see how these colors will influence interiors over the next few years.

These hand-picked paints come from color experts in the field. More often than not, they influence kitchen and bath trends. Designers love when homeowners gravitate towards new colors for a fresh perspective on their space.

To make it easy, we’ve compiled a list of the top forecasted colors for 2022 to help inspire your home interior journey!

The top forecasted colors for 2022 include, from left to right, Behr - Breezeway, Benjamin Moore - October Mist, Pittsburgh Paints - Olive Sprig, Valspar - Blanched Thyme, Glidden - Guacamole, Farrow & Ball - Breakfast Room Green, Sherwin Williams - Evergreen Fog, Akzo Nobel - Bright Skies, Farrow & Ball - Stone Blue, Valspar - Mountain River, and Valspar - Orchid Ash.

Colors of the Year

In recent years, Colors of the Year have been heavily influenced by blue-grays. Considering recent color trends in cabinets, we’re not surprised to see that greens are now making a big splash. By grouping these colors into categories, we can more easily talk about them in-depth.

Fresh Shades of Green

The strong influence of greens – like Breezeway, October Mist, Olive Sprig, and Evergreen Fog – are cool and fresh. These greens are usable as long-term, neutral colors anywhere in the home. They are also stunning choices for cabinetry. If shades of white or cream are in your home’s overall color palette, these greens will work great to add a pop of color.

When choosing to add color to your cabinetry, look for colors that have a bit of complexity in their undertones. These colors tend to blend well with others and this means your color choice will essentially have a longer life cycle.

Colors of the Year: Breezeway, October Mist, Olive Sprig and Evergreen Fog

Bold Shades of Green

Blanched Thyme, Guacamole, and Breakfast Room Green are more energetic, bold, vibrant, and warmer colors with yellowish undertones. These are wonderful colors to bring nature into the home. They’re not quite as neutral and they will definitely make a statement, so we recommend using these in a room you want to add energy and warmth.

Colors of the Year: Blanched Thyme, Guacamole, and Breakfast Room Green

Spectrum of Blues

Some of the colors of the year still do fall into the blue family, which we know has been very popular in cabinetry for the last five years. Orchid Ash, Bright Skies, Stone Blue and, Mountain River show how the blue tones are evolving into 2022. This broader spectrum of blues is very useable and showcases why blue has become a mainstream staple in the home.

Colors of the Year: Bright Skies, Stone Blue, Mountain River, and Orchid Ash

MasterBrand Introduces Finish of the Year

For the second consecutive year, MasterBrand proudly introduces our very own Finish of the Year!

This neutral paint is a pale, off-white color that makes an excellent foundation for most palettes. It’s not too white and not too gray. This finish has the ability to make a statement on its own or be paired with other accents. It purposely blends with any stain, dark to light, as well as most opaques because of its light gray undertones. Start using shades of this trendy off-white color today, which goes by the name Crushed Ice with our Decora cabinets, Nordic with our KitchenCraft cabinets and Icy Avalanche with our Diamond cabinets.

MasterBrand's Finish of the Year for 2022 is a pale, off-white color that makes an excellent foundation for most palettes.

Biophilic trends in design are a home interiors concept that connects the natural environment to indoor spaces. Anyone who can appreciate the outdoors knows that nature doesn’t make mistakes. As designers and homeowners embrace organic kitchen trends, they are creating spaces where direct or even indirect references to the world outdoors are brought into the home. This practice has proven to better reduce stress, improve cognitive function and stimulate creativity. Creating these distinct visual relationships to nature is a positive contributor to the occupants overall health and well-being.

Tips to Introduce Nature to Your Home

Nature sets the pace for these interior awakenings, but recent shifts in behaviors have helped to re-energize this kitchen trend through key design elements such as:

– Nature based colors like blues, greens and even yellow

– Open spaces with views to the outdoors and large picture windows that bring the exterior landscape inside

– Commingling of the outdoors with the indoors where joint accessibility allows functional spaces to spill into one another

– Organic textures brought inside mimic the warmth and serenity found in nature

People are craving nurturing environments. Initiating this practice within the kitchen and bath space is nothing new, but certainly lends itself well to blending current or kitchen design trends with elements of biophilic influence to establish that harmony and balance we all seek in our busy lives. A natural place to start is to bring a world of color indoors. Current kitchen trends for color meet those needs with ocean or sky blues that have covered the popular color spectrum for a while now or even the latest trends with an array of landscape inspired greens.

Landscape Greens

  • Fleeting Green: A neutral pastel with just the slightest whisper of green tint. This tone is definitely a stand-alone color that can be intensified with color compliments like grays or desert tones but will also ground a space with its refreshingly neutral hint of color.
  • Coastal Plains: A modern twist to a classic hue, this dusky green is reminiscent of historical colors that carry enough pigmentation with just enough of the smoky undertones to look well-aged and mix perfectly with whites so as not to have too much contrast.
  • Maho Bay: Can’t decide between gray, green or blue and don’t want any of them to be too overpowering? This chameleon color has great color flexibility and mimics surrounding tones to help pull the preferred dominant tone with sophistication and longevity.
  • Retreat: A succulent-inspired, soft-yet-saturated green that is harmoniously neutral to any landscape-based pallet. With flexible gray undertones, this green pairs perfectly with wood tones.
  • Endive: Synonymous with nature, this bold evergreen hue looks beautiful in kitchens, creating a deeply moody backdrop capable of blending seamlessly into the surrounding home interior.
  • Sweet Pea: Olive toned but without too much yellow or brown. This green is a long-running favorite. No wonder it stands the test of time with its ability to compliment the ever-changing home color trends of brown, beige, gray and white. Its not overpowering and always feels like the perfect fit in kitchens.

Organic Textures and Tones

Beyond colorful hues, textural, organic wood tones connect our interiors with a grounding presence of beauty, movement and warmth. A building block provided by nature and highlighted with mid-to-light tints, these wood tones still allow the natural splendor of the wood to come through. This trend is making a comeback after many years of sterile painted interiors and just in time to compliment the emergence of biophilic preferences. Wood finishes can come in complimentary colors anywhere from sand to milk chocolate as well as grays and bleached whites with varying degrees of color overlay. Some great examples are colors such as Cliff Relic or Gunny Fresco.

The key in selecting the right woody compliment is maintaining transparency so that the grain movement and visual texture provide added depth to your cabinets. Considerations of these kitchen trends are all great ways to start reconnecting with nature while benefiting from the comforts of indoors.

It’s no secret that green is in and quickly taking over as the new “pop” of color in cabinetry or as we like to call it the new neutch (neutral). MasterBrand was recently highlighted by both Better Homes & Gardens and PureWow both featuring articles about my personal favorite color, green.

Better Homes & Gardens Shines A Spotlight on This Year’s Most Popular Shade of Green with MasterBrand Cabinets

Soft and serene, sage green can add a subtle pop of color and transform any interior space.

Sage Green Cabinets

It’s official: green is in and here to stay. To help guide homeowners as they incorporate the new hue in their space, Better Homes & Gardens created an article including unique ideas for every room with help from Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends at MasterBrand Cabinets.

Aptly titled “Sage Is This Year’s Most Popular Shade of Green: Here’s How to Decorate With It,” the article outlines the best ways to incorporate this trending shade throughout your home, as well as how to enhance its look with complementary tones.

On the topic of sage green’s versatility, Stephanie says, “how the color is paired with other colors, textures, and finishes will impact the mood that you create.” For a touch of sophistication, Stephanie suggests pairing the color with bright whites and a hint of gold. Or opt for a cozier feel when pairing sage green with darker tones.

Stephanie also highlights one of her favorite spots to integrate the trending hue – the bathroom. Reminiscent of eucalyptus leaves, introducing sage green can help create a relaxing, spa-like feel, especially when paired with fresh greenery.

With a wide variety of available colors and finishes, MasterBrand Cabinets provides on-trend cabinetry options for every design aesthetic. To view all available colors and styles, visit masterbrand.com/get-started.

Better Homes and Gardens is designed for people interested in making their home and family the focal points in their lives by providing content on home improvement, decorating, remodeling, food and recipes, gardening and more.

PureWow Says Green Kitchens Are Trending: What You Need To Know

Green is one of the most popular kitchen colors of the year and Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends at MasterBrand Cabinets, is giving homeowners the green light on incorporating the trending hue – starting with cabinets.

Green Kitchen Cabinetry

When it comes to kitchen design in 2021, we’re seeing green. To celebrate the trending color in all its shades, PureWow sat down with Stephanie Pierce, director of design and trends at MasterBrand Cabinets, to discuss how to best implement the color throughout the kitchen in the article, This is the Hottest Color to Paint Your Kitchen Right Now.

When asked about incorporating green into the home Stephanie said, “Green is quickly gaining color confidence with homeowners who are realizing how well this color complements others and changes easily with the seasons just like in nature… when a color speaks to you as an individual, it will definitely enhance your love of your space.”

For homeowners considering green cabinets, Stephanie has a recommended color. “Foxhall Green is a bold and sophisticated evergreen hue that looks beautiful on cabinets or as an accent on a kitchen island. It’s a nice base color that others can build off of,” she says.
